According to data from the NYS Fitness Alliance, there have been 2.3 million check-ins to gyms and fitness centers since we’ve been allowed to re-open in NY. There have been 18 tracing calls (that’s 0.0008%), with no cases originating in or being transmitted from gyms or fitness centers.
Gyms, fitness centers and personal care businesses were among the last to re-open following the “Pause” that closed our businesses from March until August. Most of us, including Elevate, used that time to make significant upgrades to our facilities so that when we were finally allowed to reopen, we could do so as safely as possible. Further, when we were able to open, gyms, fitness centers and personal care businesses had some of the most rigorous restrictions.
We support the use a hyper-local “Micro Cluster” approach to managing and minimizing the spread of Covid-19. However, we believe that in order for such a strategy to be effective, we must use data to inform our responses and restrictions instead of using a blanket approach for localized issues. In other words, we think that for a local strategy to be effective, the solution has to be tailored to the realities of that locality.
If you agree, there are three ways you can help us promote this ideology:

I believe the current restrictions against gyms are arbitrary, punitive, and destructive. I’m writing/calling to ask that you consider using hyper-local data to inform your strategy for restrictions in high-infection zones rather than a blanket approach.
Gyms have a built in tracking system that makes contact tracing simple and effective. This combined with the rigorous restrictions previously in place along with no evidence that gyms are contributing to the spread of the virus make a strong case for keeping gyms, fitness centers and personal care businesses in Onondaga County open for business.
